Below is a list and explanation of some of the work we generally carry out:

Pruning - The removal of limbs or branches to an appropriate point to allow compartmentalization of the resulting wound. This process is normally carried out if the tree is interfering with cables, buildings etc. Or in the case of fruit trees, this is done to stimulate new growth on which the fruit will grow or to relieve stress on boughs overladen with fruit.

Thinning – This is the term given to the percentage removal of the crown of a tree whilst still retaining the original and natural shape. This practice is normally carried out if the tree is casting a large shadow or if the crown is over congested. Thinning leaves a lighter and more spacious canopy and also reduces the wind resistance of the tree making it safer in exceptionally windy weather.

Reductions – Reductions are normally performed on trees that have outgrown their position. This is done by pruning the longest branches at the edge of the crown back to suitable points to leave a naturally shaped, more condensed crown with plenty of remaining foliage.

Pollarding – This ancient form of tree management was originally used to stop deer eating the fresh coppice shoots but now it’s generally used on some species of large tree which need to be kept but are in a state of decline or dangerous. The tree is heavily pruned leaving just the main stem to sprout with epicormic growth. This can prolong the life of the tree by many years as there is no strain in the tree trying to support itself. Once a tree is pruned this way, it will need to be re-pollarded every 5 to 10 years or so depending how much it grows.

Felling– If there is no other option other than removing a tree, it can be done in two ways. If there is sufficient space and the conditions are good a tree can be felled in one go. Otherwise, a tree may be dismantled. This involves climbing the tree and taking it down bit by bit. With the use of rigging equipment, cranes and winches, this task can be performed in the tightest of locations and with any obstacles underneath or in the surrounding area.

Hedge reductions and trimming – No matter how often a hedge is trimmed to keep it in shape, it still slowly expands. So sometimes it is necessary to reduce the hedge in height and dependant on species, in breadth to regain its original proportions.

Hedge laying – As hedges grow, they tend to focus their energy to the top of the stem which gains the most light resulting in the lower branches dying off. This age old tradition of stock proofing turns the hedge on its side, by using the dense foliage at the top of the stem to fill in the bottom of the next stem. Due to more light, the stems produce new shoots which grow up through the laid hedge making a dense barrier which provides a great habitat for wildlife. There are many styles of hedge laying so please contact us to see what's suitable for your requirements.

Stump and root grinding - Whatever size stump or roots you may have, we have the ability to remove it completely. Whether in an awkward location or in the middle of your lawn. we're able to grind the stump and remove the excess arisings leaving the area safe and level allowing you uninterupted mowing or the ability to replant or turf where a tree has been before.
